Finding Your Queer Family in Conway: My Journey Through Bible Belt Rainbows
Have you ever felt like a unicorn in a field of horses? That's exactly how I felt when I first moved to Conway, Arkansas as an out and proud queer person.
When Arkansas Surprised Me
Three years ago, I arrived in Conway with my rainbow bumper sticker and a suitcase full of anxiety. I remember walking through Hendrix College's campus, wondering if I'd ever find my people. Then one rainy Tuesday, I stumbled upon a tiny queer book club meeting at the back of That Bookstore—five people huddled over coffee and copies of Carmen Maria Machado, laughing like they'd known each other forever. They waved me over without hesitation.
The Dating App Desert
Let's be honest — finding queer connection here isn't always easy. The dating apps show the same ten profiles for miles, and sometimes it feels like:
- Everyone knows everyone already
- The closest queer events are in Little Rock
- Coming out means coming out repeatedly to new people
- Finding safe spaces requires insider knowledge
Building Your Queer Constellation
What I've learned is that queer community in Conway exists in constellations, not crowds. Start with UCA's Pride organization even if you're not a student. The Methodist church on Harkrider has a surprisingly affirming monthly potluck. Online, the "Queer in Central Arkansas" Facebook group has been my lifeline for events.
Remember, your queerness is valid here. Each authentic connection creates another star in our collective Arkansas sky. You're never as alone as you feel.
