Finding Your Queer Family in Small-Town Arkansas
Have you ever felt like the only rainbow fish swimming in a very straight pond? That was me when I first moved to Rogers, Arkansas three years ago.
My Rogers Reality
I remember walking through downtown Rogers that first weekend, past the brick storefronts and charming cafes, wondering if there were any other queer folks hiding in plain sight. At the farmers market, I caught eyes with someone wearing a subtle pride pin, and that small moment of recognition felt like finding water in a desert.
When You're the "Only One"
The struggle is real when:
- Dating apps show the nearest match is 45+ miles away
- Well-meaning neighbors keep asking about your "friend" who visits
- You analyze every interaction for safety before being yourself
- Local events rarely feel designed with you in mind
Creating Space Where None Exists
What I've learned is that we make the community we need. Starting with Bentonville Pride connections, I found a small but mighty queer network that spans NWA. We began meeting monthly at Crystal Bridges, creating our own table when no seat was offered.
Sometimes visibility itself is revolution. Wearing my identity openly has connected me with allies and fellow queer folks I'd never have met otherwise.
You Are Not Alone Here
The beauty of Rogers? Behind its traditional exterior beats a heart more diverse than appears. Your people are here, sometimes just waiting for you to make the first move.
