Finding My Rainbow in La Puente: A Queer Journey in the SGV
Have you ever felt like the only queer person in your neighborhood, walking through familiar streets yet somehow feeling invisible? That was me three years ago, stepping off the bus at Hacienda Boulevard, wondering if I'd ever find my people in La Puente.
My La Puente Story
I moved here from Echo Park, trading hipster coffee shops for my abuela's spare bedroom after college. While I loved being closer to family, I suddenly felt like I had to dim my queerness in this seemingly traditional suburb. Those first months, I'd ride the Silver Streak into downtown LA just to breathe freely among other LGBTQ+ folks.
The Invisible Struggle
Let's be honest about what many of us face here:
- The assumption that all queer people flee to West Hollywood or Long Beach
- Family expectations in a community where many households are multi-generational
- Limited queer-specific spaces in the San Gabriel Valley
- The exhaustion of coming out repeatedly in everyday interactions
Creating Community Where You Are
What changed everything was stopping my search for the "perfect" queer community and starting to build one instead:
- Connect with the San Gabriel Valley LGBTQ+ Center in Arcadia
- Join local Facebook groups like "SGV Queer Exchange"
- Attend Latinx LGBTQ+ events at La Puente Library
- Support queer-owned businesses (Tía Juana's on Valley is owned by a lesbian couple!)
Remember, your queerness doesn't need downtown coolness to be valid. Our community has always existed here, just sometimes beneath the surface. Your presence makes La Puente more beautifully queer each day.
