Ever Wondered What It's Like Being Queer in Ontario, CA?
I still remember my first Pride event here—nervously walking through downtown Ontario with rainbow flags waving around me. The California sun was beating down, but the warmth I felt came more from finally feeling seen in this corner of the Inland Empire.
Finding My Place in the IE
After moving from LA three years ago, I worried Ontario wouldn't have the queer community I needed. Those first months were lonely—wandering through Ontario Mills mall, hoping to catch glimpses of other LGBTQ+ folks. Eventually, I found my people at a tiny bookstore hosting queer poetry nights!
The Real Struggle Is Real
Let's be honest about some challenges we face here:
- Dating apps show the same 15 people on repeat (anyone else?)
- Having to drive to Riverside or LA for bigger queer events
- Explaining to well-meaning neighbors that my "roommate" is actually my partner
- Finding affirming healthcare providers who truly get it
What's Actually Worked For Me
Through trial and error, I've discovered some approaches that help:
- Connect with the Inland Empire Pride organization
- Join online groups specific to Ontario/IE queer community
- Support local queer-owned businesses (they exist!)
- Be visible when it feels safe—you'll attract your people
Remember, your experience is valid. The loneliness or disconnection you might feel isn't because something's wrong with you—building community takes time, especially in smaller cities.
