Finding Home as a Queer Person in Rancho Cordova
Have you ever felt like you're constantly searching for your community in a place that wasn't designed with you in mind? That was me three years ago when I first moved to Rancho Cordova.
My Unexpected Journey in RC
I remember driving down Sunrise Boulevard, wondering if I'd ever find my people here. The Sacramento suburb seemed so different from the queer-friendly neighborhoods I'd known before. But then I discovered a small coffee shop with a tiny rainbow flag in the window. That's where I met Jamie, who introduced me to what would become my chosen family in this unexpected place.
The Invisible Struggle
Being queer in Rancho Cordova comes with unique challenges:
- The scattered nature of our community makes finding each other difficult
- Navigating spaces that aren't explicitly queer-friendly
- The constant coming out process with new neighbors and coworkers
- Finding dating prospects in a smaller community
Building Your Queer Sanctuary
What I've learned is that creating community takes intention here:
- Join the Lavender Library events that sometimes happen in Rancho Cordova
- Check out Gold Country Pride Center's satellite programs
- Create your own micro-gatherings at places like Sunset Park
- Be the visibility you wish to see in our community
Remember, your queerness is valid whether you're at a massive Pride parade or simply existing authentically in your Rancho Cordova apartment. Our stories matter here too.
