Finding My Queer Family in Rancho Cucamonga: A Journey of Belonging
Have you ever felt like you were searching for your people in a place where they seemed impossible to find? That was me, five years ago, walking through Victoria Gardens with a rainbow pin hidden on the inside of my jacket.
Planting Roots in the Inland Empire
When I first moved to Rancho Cucamonga, the wide streets and suburban calm felt worlds away from the queer communities I'd known before. I remember sitting alone at Coffee Klatch, wondering if I'd made a terrible mistake. Would I ever find my people here, between the mountain views and strip malls? The first time I saw another queer person—recognized that silent nod of acknowledgment at the Farmers Market—I felt my heart leap.
The Invisible Tightrope We Walk
Let's be real about the challenges we face:
- Dating apps show prospects in LA or Palm Springs, rarely nearby
- Community spaces are scattered and sometimes hard to find
- That constant calculation about when and where it's safe to be fully yourself
- Finding queer-friendly healthcare providers who truly understand
Creating Space Where There Wasn't One
What changed everything for me was stopping waiting and starting building. I began hosting monthly picnics at Red Hill Park. Started a tiny book club at the library. Connected with Inland Empire Pride organizers. The community was here all along—just disconnected, waiting for bridges to be built.
Remember: you're not alone in this beautiful, complicated place we call home. Your experiences matter, and there are others nearby holding the same hopes you carry.
