Finding My Rainbow in Redlands: A Queer Journey
Have you ever felt like you're both invisible and too visible at the same time? That's how I felt when I first moved to Redlands as an out queer person three years ago.
My Redlands Story
I remember walking through downtown Redlands on a warm Saturday morning, taking in the historic buildings and palm-lined streets. The farmers market was bustling, and as I browsed local honey stands and artisan bread, I wondered: where are my people? It wasn't until I spotted a subtle pride pin on a barista's apron at Augies Coffee that I felt that first spark of belonging.
The Struggle Is Real
Finding community in smaller cities presents unique challenges:
- Dating pools that feel more like dating puddles
- Navigating spaces where you're often the "token" queer person
- Balancing visibility with safety in less progressive areas
- Finding authentic connections beyond superficial "gay friendships"
Creating Your Queer Oasis
After three years, I've learned that queer community isn't always where you expect it:
- Check out events at the University of Redlands - their Pride Center hosts gatherings open to community members
- Join regional groups that meet in Riverside and San Bernardino
- Create the spaces you wish existed - my monthly queer book club started with just three people!
- Be patient with yourself and the process of building community
Remember, your queerness doesn't need validation through numbers. Some days I still feel alone, but I've learned that strong roots grow slowly. You belong in Redlands just as much as anyone else.
