Finding Your Rainbow in Orange County: A Queer's Guide to Tustin
Have you ever felt like an exotic bird in a sea of pigeons while walking through The District at Tustin Legacy? That was me three years ago, fresh from San Francisco and wondering if I'd made a terrible mistake.
My Tustin Story
When I moved to Tustin for that aerospace engineering job, I traded Castro Street for palm-lined suburbia. The first month, I ate alone at Rutabegorz, scrolling dating apps that showed the nearest queer person was "15 miles away." I was the 15-miles-away person for someone else! Yet slowly, between Old Town's historic buildings and the weekly farmers market, I discovered pockets of queer joy hiding in plain sight.
The Invisible Tightrope We Walk
Let's be honest about the challenges:
- The constant coming-out carousel with new neighbors and coworkers
- Dating apps where everyone seems to be in Long Beach or WeHo
- That awkward moment when someone assumes your "roommate" is just a roommate
- Finding your people when there's no designated "gayborhood"
Creating Your Queer Oasis
Here's what actually worked for me:
- Join the LGBTQ+ Center OC's events - they're just a short drive away
- Become a regular somewhere - the baristas at Lost Bean now know my name and pronouns
- Expand your radius - Tustin is centrally located for accessing queer spaces in nearby cities
- Start something new - my queer book club began with just three people!
Remember, suburban queerness is its own kind of revolutionary. Your existence here matters and makes space for others.
