Finding Your Rainbow in the Shadow of Pikes Peak
Have you ever felt like you're living two lives in Colorado Springs—one where you smile politely at neighbors who might not fully see you, and another where you can finally exhale when surrounded by chosen family?
My Springs Story
When I first moved to Colorado Springs three years ago, I was struck by the stunning backdrop of Pikes Peak against the sky, but felt invisible among the city's military-conservative reputation. That first winter, I wandered into Wild Goose Meeting House during a snowstorm and spotted a tiny pride pin on the barista's apron. That simple moment of recognition led to my first genuine connection here.
The Springs Struggle
Let's be real about the challenges we face:
- Navigating the patchwork of acceptance between downtown's embrace and some suburban cold shoulders
- Finding dating prospects in a smaller queer pool (we're not Denver!)
- Building community when spaces sometimes appear and disappear
- Weathering the political tensions that can make even casual conversations feel loaded
Creating Your Queer Oasis
Despite these challenges, I've discovered beautiful ways to thrive here:
- Club Q survivors have shown us the power of resilience and community care
- The Inside Out Youth Services creates safe spaces for younger queers
- Smaller gatherings in homes and parks often feel more authentic than formal venues
- Nature becomes our sanctuary—there's something healing about being queer on a mountain trail
Remember, your existence here matters. Every time you live authentically, you make this city more vibrant for all of us. Share your Colorado Springs story below—where do you find your community here?
