Finding My Rainbow in Suburbia: A Queer Journey in Northglenn
Have you ever felt like the only splash of color in a beige suburban landscape? That was me, three years ago, when I first moved to Northglenn as an out-and-proud queer person wondering if I'd ever find my people.
My Northglenn Story
The first winter here, I would drive past rows of neat houses with their holiday decorations, feeling like an outsider looking in. Then one evening, walking through Webster Lake Park, I spotted a pride flag fluttering from a balcony. That tiny rectangle of rainbow colors felt like a lighthouse beacon guiding me home.
When Being Yourself Feels Radical
- Finding queer-friendly spaces beyond Denver proper
- Navigating well-meaning but clueless neighbors
- Building community when there's no obvious gathering spot
- Dating in a smaller suburb (yes, the apps feel extra small here!)
Creating Your Own Queer Oasis
Instead of waiting for the perfect community to appear, I started small. Coffee meetups at Periodic Brewing. A queer book club that now meets monthly at the Northglenn Recreation Center. Sometimes building community means being the community you wish existed.
Remember that your queerness doesn't diminish in suburban spaces—it illuminates them. Your presence here makes Northglenn more vibrant, more diverse, more real.
