Finding Your Rainbow in Westminster: My Queer Journey
Have you ever felt like you're the only queer person wandering the streets of your suburban town, searching for a glimpse of rainbow in a seemingly monochrome landscape?
My Westminster Story
When I first moved to Westminster, Colorado, I spent countless evenings at the Westminster Promenade, watching families and straight couples enjoying their time together while I silently wondered where my people were. The Butterfly Pavilion became my thinking spot - somewhere between the flutter of wings and quiet contemplation, I realized I needed to create the community I was seeking rather than just hoping to stumble upon it.
The Invisible Tightrope We Walk
Let's be honest about our struggles:
- Dating apps that show the same 5 queer people within a 50-mile radius
- Community events that feel hetero-centric
- The coffee shop dilemma: "Is that person queer or just really into alternative fashion?"
- Finding safe spaces to fully express yourself
Building Your Queer Oasis
Here's what actually worked for me:
- Join the Out Front events that occasionally come through the north metro area
- Frequent Stanley Marketplace just a short drive away - it's become surprisingly queer-friendly
- Create a small gathering at Standley Lake with like-minded folks
- Connect with Denver's queer community and bring that energy back to Westminster
Remember, your queerness doesn't diminish in suburbs. Sometimes it's about creating the light rather than searching for it.
