Finding My Queer Joy Under Florida Palms
Have you ever felt like you're living two lives? One where you're authentically yourself and another where you're constantly calculating how much of that self is safe to reveal?
My Coconut Creek Chronicles
When I moved to Coconut Creek three years ago, I brought along my plants, my favorite reading chair, and a deep fear that I'd never find community. The sprawling suburbs with their perfect lawns seemed picture-perfect but potentially isolating for someone like me. I remember walking through Butterfly World alone, surrounded by beauty but feeling invisible.
The Dating App Dilemma
Let's talk about the real struggle of queer dating in suburban Florida:
- Most matches lived 45+ minutes away in Fort Lauderdale or Miami
- Coffee dates required strategic planning around traffic
- The constant coming out to new neighbors and coworkers
- Finding spaces that weren't just "gay-friendly" but actually affirming
Creating Queer Space Where There Was None
What changed everything was stopping waiting for community and starting to build it. I began hosting monthly potlucks at Sabal Pines Park. We started small—just three of us the first time—but now we regularly have 15+ queer folks gathering, sharing food and stories under the banyan trees.
Remember that your queerness is valid even in spaces that weren't built with you in mind. Sometimes belonging isn't something you find but something you create.
