Finding Queer Joy in Small-Town Florida: My Deltona Story
Ever wondered what it's like being the only person at Publix with a pride pin on your backpack? That was me, three years ago, newly moved to Deltona and feeling like I'd landed on another planet.
My Unexpected Deltona Journey
I moved here for a teaching job, not expecting much from this sleepy part of Volusia County. Those first months were tough. I scanned coffee shops for rainbow flags and checked Facebook for any sign of queer life. The closest pride event was in Orlando, and I felt isolated in my little rental near Lake Monroe.
The Invisible Challenges
Being queer in Deltona means facing unique struggles:
- Dating apps show matches 40+ miles away
- Limited LGBTQ+ social spaces within city limits
- Navigating well-meaning but clueless neighbors
- Finding healthcare providers who understand queer needs
- Building community without obvious gathering places
Creating Space Where None Exists
Eventually, I realized waiting for community wouldn't work—I needed to build it. Starting small made all the difference:
- Hosting monthly potlucks at my place
- Creating a Deltona Queer Facebook group (now 86 members!)
- Collaborating with the Deltona library for LGBTQ+ book displays
- Finding allies at local businesses like Trilogy Coffee
Remember, queer joy exists even in unlikely places. You're not alone in Deltona—we're just harder to find. Our small community is vibrant, supportive, and growing every day.
