Finding My Rainbow in Port St. Lucie: A Queer Journey of Belonging
Have you ever felt like a splash of color in a seemingly monochrome world? That was me three years ago when I first moved to Port St. Lucie, wondering if I'd ever find my people in this coastal Florida town.
When Palm Trees Met Pride Flags
I still remember driving down Port St. Lucie Boulevard, windows down, secretly scanning for any hint of rainbow. The city looked picturesque with its palm-lined streets and waterfront views, but I wondered: where were my fellow queer folks hiding? That first month, I spent evenings alone at Tradition Square, watching families and couples, feeling like an invisible observer rather than a participant.
The Isolation We Don't Talk About
Let's be honest about the struggles:
- Dating apps showing matches 50+ miles away (hello, three-hour round-trip for coffee)
- Carefully navigating conversations with new neighbors
- Finding social spaces that aren't explicitly labeled "gay bars" but are still affirming
- That constant internal debate: "Should I come out to this person or not?"
Creating Your Own Queer Oasis
What changed everything was stopping waiting for community and starting to build it instead. I joined the Treasure Coast LGBTQ+ group on social platforms. Started a monthly book club at Morningside Library. Found allies at the Saturday Farmers Market who introduced me to others.
