Finding My Rainbow in a Small Florida Town
Ever wondered what it's like to be the only one waving a pride flag in a sea of fishing poles? That was me three years ago when I moved to Titusville, nestled right between NASA's launchpads and endless waterways.
Space Coast Surprises
I arrived in Titusville with boxes full of belongings but a heart empty of expectations. My apartment overlooked the Indian River, where manatees appeared like gentle reminders that sometimes the most beautiful things exist quietly beneath the surface. Just like my identity. During my first month, I'd watch rocket launches from my balcony, feeling simultaneously small under those vast skies yet somehow more visible than I'd ever been back home.
When Being Yourself Feels Like Being Alone
The struggle was real, y'all:
- Dating apps showed the nearest queer person was 30+ miles away
- Local coffee shops had no visible signs of LGBTQ+ friendly spaces
- Making friends who truly "got it" seemed impossible
I spent countless evenings scrolling through social media, wondering if I'd made a terrible mistake choosing this space-obsessed town.
Creating Your Own Gravity
What changed everything was stopping the search for spaces that already existed and beginning to create them instead:
- Started a monthly meetup at Playalinda Brewing Company
- Connected with the Brevard Pride organization
- Found unexpected allies at the Space Coast Progressive Alliance
Remember: Small towns don't limit how brightly you shine—they just offer different skies to sparkle in.
You aren't alone in feeling alone. There are pockets of rainbows throughout Titusville—sometimes we just need to be brave enough to be the first color that appears after the storm.
