Finding My Rainbow in Marietta: A Queer Georgian's Journey
Ever wondered what it's like to navigate life as a queer person in a Southern suburb where church steeples outnumber pride flags? Let me tell you, it's been quite the adventure!
My Marietta Story
I still remember that sticky summer evening at Marietta Square, holding my partner's hand for the first time in public. Heart racing, palms sweaty—not just from the Georgia heat. The mix of supportive smiles and uncomfortable stares painted a perfect picture of my hometown: a place of contradictions, slowly but surely evolving.
When Southern Hospitality Gets Complicated
Being queer in Marietta means:
- Getting asked "Is that your friend?" when introducing your partner to neighbors
- Finding those magical safe spaces (shoutout to Cool Beans Coffee for being my sanctuary!)
- Navigating family gatherings where acceptance varies from person to person
- Creating chosen family when biological ones struggle
Finding Your People
What helped me thrive was connecting with Marietta's surprisingly vibrant queer community. Start with local PFLAG meetings or check out East Cobb's inclusive book clubs. The Marietta Rainbow Coalition hosts monthly mixers that changed my life—I met both my best friend and my current partner there!
Remember, your queerness isn't something that needs hiding—it's your superpower, even in the suburbs. You belong here just as much as anyone else, sweet tea and all.
