Being Visibly Queer in Idaho Falls: More Than Just Potatoes & Politics
Have you ever felt like you're the only rainbow fish swimming in a sea of sameness? That's exactly how I felt when I first moved to Idaho Falls three years ago.
My Idaho Falls Journey
Picture this: me, walking down the River Walk with my pronoun pin proudly displayed, getting those curious glances from passersby. I remember sitting alone at Villa Coffeehouse, wondering if I'd ever find my people in this town where the Snake River runs but queer visibility sometimes feels like a trickle.
The Invisible Tightrope We Walk
Let's be real about the struggles:
- Dating apps that show the same 10 people within a 50-mile radius
- Well-meaning coworkers who don't realize how exhausting it is to be the "educator"
- The constant calculation of when and how to come out in new situations
- Finding affirming healthcare providers who don't make you explain your identity
Creating Your Oasis
What I've learned through trial, error, and sometimes tears:
- The public library hosts more inclusive events than you'd expect
- Building community might mean becoming the organizer you wish existed
- Idaho Falls Pride may be small, but it's mighty in heart and connection
- Sometimes safety means finding your people online first before meeting IRL
Remember, your authenticity isn't determined by how many other queer folks surround you. Your existence here makes Idaho Falls more colorful, more whole.
