Has anyone else felt like the only queer person in a cornfield?
I remember my first week in Champaign-Illinois, standing outside The Canopy Club, watching straight couples file in while I clutched my phone wondering if I'd ever find my people. The midwest wasn't exactly known for its thriving queer scenes—at least that's what I thought.
Finding Rainbows Among the Cornfields
Three months later, I was sitting in the basement of a local bookstore with a group of queer folks talking about everything from gender theory to which professor had the best ally sticker on their office door. Champaign had surprised me in the best possible way.
When It Feels Like You're the Only One
Let's be real though—even with community spaces, finding connection here can be HARD:
- Dating apps that show the same 10 people within a 50-mile radius
- The awkward "are they queer or just artsy?" guessing game
- Explaining your pronouns to the same barista for the fifth time
- Trying to figure out which spaces are actually safe versus performatively inclusive
Creating Your Own Magic
What saved me was realizing I didn't need to find the community—I could help build it:
- Start small: Even a three-person picnic at Crystal Lake Park can become a monthly gathering
- Check out UIUC's LGBT Resource Center (even if you're not a student!)
- The UP Center of Champaign County hosts events where you'll meet folks beyond college age
- Don't underestimate Unitarian churches and indie bookstores as gathering spaces
Remember, you're never truly alone in this experience. For every person feeling isolated, there's another nearby wishing for connection just like you.
