Finding My Queer Voice in Suburban Chicago
Have you ever felt like the only rainbow in a sea of beige? That was my reality when I first moved to Glenview three years ago. I remember standing in The Glen Town Center, wondering if I was the only queer person for miles.
My Glenview Journey
The North Shore suburbs aren't exactly known for their vibrant LGBTQ+ scenes. My first winter here, I found myself trudging through snow to my car after work, desperately missing the queer community I'd left behind in Chicago. Then came that magical night at the Glenview Public Library's community board where I spotted a flyer for a local LGBTQ+ meetup at a coffee shop on Waukegan Road. That simple piece of paper changed everything.
The Suburban Queer Struggle
- Finding your people when there's no obvious gathering spaces
- Dating apps that connect you with folks an hour away in the city
- Navigating mixed reactions from neighbors and coworkers
- The constant coming-out carousel with new acquaintances
Creating Your Queer Village
What I've learned is that we have to create the community we need. Start small - I began hosting monthly potlucks, inviting the few queer folks I knew and encouraging them to bring friends. We now have over 20 regulars! Don't underestimate suburban allies either - Glenview has surprised me with its growing inclusivity.
Remember, your queerness doesn't diminish just because you live among minivans and manicured lawns. You belong here too, and there are others like us hiding in plain sight.
