Does Anyone Else Feel Like Being Queer in South Bend Is Both Beautiful and Challenging?
I still remember that first winter here, walking along the St. Joseph River with snow crunching beneath my boots, wondering if I'd ever find my people in this midwestern college town.
My South Bend Story
When I moved here three years ago, I was immediately struck by the strange duality of this place - Notre Dame's golden dome looming over a city still finding its progressive voice. Those first months were lonely. I'd wander into cafés downtown, hoping someone might notice the subtle pride pin on my jacket. Sometimes they did. More often, they didn't.
The Invisible Tightrope
- Finding queer-friendly spaces beyond The Well (our only dedicated LGBTQ+ venue)
- Dating apps that show the same 12 people within a 50-mile radius
- Navigating family visits when half the restaurants feel politically charged
- The constant coming out to new coworkers, neighbors, and service providers
What's Actually Working For Me
I've discovered that creating the community I wanted meant becoming its catalyst. The monthly potlucks I started in my apartment now draw 20+ queer folks. We've built something beautiful through intention rather than convenience.
Finding queer joy here means embracing the in-between spaces: poetry nights at Ugly Mugs, volleyball at Howard Park, and the surprisingly affirming UU congregation.
