Finding Queer Joy in the Heart of Kansas
Ever wonder what it's like being the only rainbow fish in what feels like an endless sea of sameness? That was me, three years ago, when I first moved to Topeka with nothing but two suitcases and a trembling hope that I could find my people here.
My Topeka Story
I still remember that first Saturday wandering downtown, feeling simultaneously invisible and too visible. The Capitol building loomed overhead as I nursed an iced coffee, wondering if I'd made a terrible mistake. Then I spotted a small pride flag in a bookstore window. Inside, I found not just books but my first friend in Kansas – the owner who hosts a monthly queer book club that became my lifeline.
The Invisible Tightrope
Being queer in Topeka means navigating unique challenges:
- The constant mental calculation of when and where it's safe to be fully yourself
- Dating apps where the same 15 profiles circulate in an endless loop
- Building community when gatherings are precious but scarce
- Explaining to well-meaning straight friends why you can't just "move to a bigger city"
Finding Your Way Home
What I've learned is that queer joy exists here, but sometimes we must create it ourselves:
- The Equality House hosts events beyond just Pride month
- Online groups specifically for Kansas queer folks become real-life connections
- Creating small rituals of authenticity – whether it's a button on your backpack or a monthly dinner with chosen family
Remember, your existence here is both radical and necessary. You aren't just surviving – you're helping create space for others who will come after you.
