Finding My Rainbow in Medford: A Queer Journey of Belonging
Have you ever felt like you're simultaneously invisible and too visible at the same time? That's how I felt when I first moved to Medford as an out-and-proud queer person.
My Medford Story
Last winter, I stood nervously at the Tufts campus coffee shop, rainbow pin glinting on my jacket, wondering if anyone would show up to the queer meetup I'd organized. Medford wasn't exactly known as a queer hub compared to neighboring Somerville. The minutes ticked by, and just as I was about to leave, five people walked in, seeking the same connection I was.
The Struggle Is Real
Living in suburban Massachusetts comes with its own set of challenges for us:
- Finding authentic queer spaces beyond the handful of events
- Dating apps that show the same 20 people over and over
- That awkward moment when straight colleagues ask if you've tried that one gay bar they've heard of
- Navigating the surprisingly conservative pockets that still exist here
Creating Your Queer Medford
What I've learned is that sometimes we need to build what we're seeking:
- The Chevalier Theatre hosts amazing drag shows monthly - go with intention to make friends, not just watch
- Medford Farmers Market has become a casual queer meetup spot on Thursdays
- Start small gatherings at places like Goldilox Bagels or The Porch
- Connect with Tufts and Medford High GSA for community events
Remember, you're not alone in feeling alone. That paradox is part of our shared experience. Your queerness is both your challenge and your superpower in building community here.
