Finding Your Rainbow in Midland: A Queer Journey
Have you ever felt like you were the only queer person in your small Midwestern town? That was me five years ago when I first moved to Midland, Michigan.
My Midland Story
I remember walking through downtown Midland during their summer festivals, admiring the beautiful tridge (yes, our three-way bridge has a cute name!), and wondering if I'd ever find my community here. The chemical plants and conservative reputation made me nervous about being my authentic self. But then I stumbled upon a tiny rainbow flag in the window of a local coffee shop, and everything changed.
The Invisible Tightrope
Living queer in Midland often means navigating:
- The constant coming-out carousel with new coworkers and neighbors
- Dating apps where the nearest match is 45+ minutes away
- Well-meaning but uncomfortable questions at community events
- Finding the balance between visibility and safety
Creating Your Own Magic
Here's what helped me thrive:
- Micro-communities matter - Our monthly LGBTQ+ book club started with just four people but has become my chosen family
- The Perceptions organization hosts events worth the drive to neighboring towns
- Saginaw Valley State University has queer events open to community members
- Being the representation I needed—sometimes wearing that pride pin makes you the lighthouse for others
Remember, feeling isolated doesn't mean you're truly alone. There are pockets of queer joy in Midland—sometimes hidden, sometimes blooming in plain sight.
