Finding My Rainbow in the Heart of Michigan
Have you ever felt like you're simultaneously invisible and too visible at the same time? That's what being queer in Pontiac felt like when I first moved here three years ago.
My Pontiac Journey
I remember walking down Saginaw Street, past the colorful murals and historic architecture, wondering if there were others like me hiding in plain sight. Pontiac's industrial charm welcomed me, but I wasn't sure if I would be welcomed. The first breakthrough came at the local farmers market when I noticed a small rainbow pin on the vendor selling homemade jams. That tiny symbol led to my first queer friendship in this city.
The Struggle Is Real
Finding community here hasn't been without challenges:
- The dating pool feels microscopic compared to bigger cities
- Meeting other queer folks often requires driving to Ferndale or Royal Oak
- Navigating which spaces are truly safe versus performatively inclusive
- Dealing with the occasional side-eye at Crofoot events
Building Your Queer Oasis
Start small. The Pontiac LGBTQ+ Facebook groups changed everything for me. There are monthly meetups at Liberty Bar that fly under the radar but provide crucial connection points. The Oakland University GSA welcomes community members, not just students. And don't sleep on the Pontiac Creative Arts Center—their inclusive workshops have been a lifeline.
You Are Not Alone
On my loneliest days, I remind myself that queer folks have always existed in small cities, creating beauty and finding each other against all odds. Your experience matters, your presence matters, and your story adds to the vibrant tapestry of this community.
