Finding Queer Joy in the Biggest Little City
Have you ever felt like a sparkling unicorn trying to find your herd in a sea of tumbleweeds? I remember my first winter in Reno—watching snow dust the Sierra Nevadas while wondering if I'd ever find my people here.
My Reno Rainbow Journey
Three years ago, I moved from Portland to Reno for work, bringing nothing but two suitcases and an anxious cat named Bowie. Those first months were a whirlwind of desert sunsets and casino lights, but something was missing. The queer spaces felt hidden, tucked away like secrets. I found myself spending Friday nights with Bowie, scrolling endlessly through dating apps where the same 12 profiles kept reappearing.
The Struggle Is Real, Darling
Let's be honest about the challenges we face:
- The "Do you know so-and-so?" phenomenon in our small queer community
- Dating apps where you've already matched with everyone
- Finding inclusive spaces beyond the few gay bars
- Building authentic connections when you're not into the nightlife scene
Blooming Where We're Planted
But here's what I've discovered: Reno's queer community isn't small—it's intimate. It's not lacking—it's waiting to be created by us. I started hosting monthly potlucks at my apartment, joined the LGBTQ+ bowling league, and volunteered at Our Center. Suddenly, the city transformed.
Remember, your queerness is valid whether you're draped in rainbow flags at Pride or quietly existing in spaces that weren't made for us. Your presence here matters and makes Reno brighter.
