Finding Your Rainbow in the Granite State: A Queer Journey
Have you ever felt like the only rainbow in a sea of gray? That was me, three years ago, when I first moved to Concord. No queer friends, no idea where to find community, just me and my U-Haul dreams in New Hampshire's capital city.
My Concord Story
I remember walking through downtown that first autumn, leaves crunching underfoot, wondering if I'd made a mistake. The State House gleamed in the distance, but I couldn't see myself reflected anywhere. Then, a simple rainbow sticker in a coffee shop window changed everything. The barista, noticing my pride pin, whispered about a monthly meetup at Gibson's Bookstore. One brave conversation led to my first queer friend here.
When Being Yourself Feels Impossible
Let's be honest about the challenges:
- The dating pool feels puddle-sized (and yes, everyone does know your ex)
- Coming out repeatedly gets exhausting in professional settings
- Winter isolation is real, especially when chosen family lives far away
- Finding affirming healthcare providers requires detective-level research
Creating Your Queer Oasis
Here's what helped me build my community:
- Join the Concord PFLAG chapter – even as an adult, it's a lifeline
- Volunteer with NH Pride – the connections last year-round
- Create the space you wish existed (my monthly queer game night started with just three people!)
- Be visible when safe – your existence gives others courage
You aren't alone in this capital city. Behind those historic facades and traditional New England reserve, there's a vibrant queer community waiting to welcome you home. We're in the coffee shops, bookstores, and yes, even the State House.
