Finding My Rainbow in the Desert: A Queer Journey in Las Cruces
Have you ever felt like you're searching for a mirage in the vast New Mexico desert? That's how I felt when I first moved to Las Cruces as my authentic queer self.
My Las Cruces Story
Three years ago, I packed my car and drove across state lines to start a teaching position at NMSU. The Organ Mountains welcomed me with their majestic presence, but I wondered if I would find my people beneath their shadow. Those first months were a blend of breathtaking sunsets and silent nights scrolling through dating apps with no matches within 50 miles.
When Being Yourself Feels Like Too Much
Let's be honest about the challenges:
- That awkward moment when you mention your partner and the conversation suddenly shifts
- Walking into Pride Desert, the only queer-friendly café in town, hoping to make friends but feeling too shy to approach anyone
- Trying to date in a smaller city where everyone seems connected already
- Balancing visibility with safety in certain spaces
Creating Your Queer Oasis
What I've learned is that queer community here doesn't announce itself with rainbow flags on every corner, but it exists and it's beautiful:
- Join the Las Cruces LGBTQ+ Resource Center's monthly potlucks - I met my closest friends at a game night there
- Volunteer with PFLAG Las Cruces to connect with allies and community members
- Visit the farmer's market on weekends - you'd be surprised how many queer vendors and artists gather there
- Follow @QueerDesertsLC on social media for events that don't always make the mainstream calendars
Remember, sometimes in smaller communities, we don't just find queer spaces - we create them together.
You are not alone in this desert, beautiful human. Your presence here makes Las Cruces more colorful, more diverse, and more whole.
