Finding My Rainbow in Rocky Mount: A Queer Journey in Small-Town NC
Have you ever felt like the only splash of color in a grayscale world? That was me, three years ago, when I first moved to Rocky Mount with nothing but two suitcases and a heart full of anxiety.
My Rocky Mount Reality
The first month here was a blur of sweet tea, suspicious glances, and silent dinners at local spots where I'd scan for any sign of queer life. I remember sitting at Westridge Grill, watching couples hold hands freely while I kept my rainbow bracelet hidden beneath my sleeve. Rocky Mount wasn't exactly advertising itself as a queer haven, but beneath the surface, I discovered pockets of acceptance that changed everything.
When Connection Feels Impossible
- That paralyzing fear of being the "token queer person" in every space
- Dating apps showing the nearest match is 45+ minutes away
- Constantly calculating when to come out and when to stay quiet
- Missing the casual recognition that comes with queer-specific spaces
Creating Your Own Light
I started small—a Pride pin on my backpack at the coffee shop. That tiny beacon connected me with Morgan, who introduced me to a monthly gathering at someone's home. Sometimes building community means becoming the community organizer you need. The Rocky Mount library allowed us to start a LGBTQ+ book club that now has fifteen regular members!
You Are Not the Only One
Those feelings of isolation? They're real, valid, and shared by so many of us scattered across small southern towns. Your existence here matters tremendously—each of us visible makes it safer for someone else still hiding.
