Finding Queer Joy in Small-Town Ohio: My Fairfield Journey
Have you ever felt like the only rainbow flag in a sea of sameness? That was me four years ago when I moved to Fairfield for work, wondering if I'd ever find my people in this corner of Ohio.
My Fairfield Beginning
The first six months were lonely. I'd walk through Village Green Park on weekends, hyper-aware of how I presented, wondering if anyone else there was family. I'd drive past Fairfield Footlights Theatre wondering if there might be queer folks inside, too afraid to check. I didn't expect to find love at the Cincinnati Pride event I almost didn't attend, much less with someone who lived just three streets away in Fairfield this whole time!
The Invisible Tightrope
Let's talk about the challenges we face here:
- The constant coming-out carousel with new neighbors, coworkers, and service providers
- Finding date spots where you feel safe showing affection
- Building queer community in spaces not designed for us
- Navigating well-meaning but awkward allies ("You're my first gay friend!")
Creating Space When None Exists
What saved me was creating what I couldn't find. Our monthly potluck started with just four queer folks in my apartment and now includes over twenty regulars. We've learned:
- The local library offers meeting space for community groups
- Social media groups can help you find others nearby
- Being visibly queer (safely) helps others find you
- Fairfield Coffee has become surprisingly welcoming
Remember, your existence here matters. Every time you live authentically, you're creating permission for someone else watching silently. What's your Fairfield experience? I'd love to hear how you're making space.
