Is Lakewood, Ohio Actually the Queer Haven We've Been Looking For?
When I first moved to Lakewood three years ago, I had no idea I was stepping into what would become my queer sanctuary. That first night, wandering into The Side Quest for their "Gaymer Night," I found myself surrounded by rainbow-haired humans excitedly debating character builds and my heart just knew—I was home.
Finding My People on Detroit Avenue
Lakewood's walkable streets became my runway. Between the independent coffee shops and the monthly drag brunches at Mahall's, I discovered pieces of myself I'd kept hidden for years. The joy of holding hands with my partner while strolling past the rainbow flags dotting porches along our streets still gives me butterflies.
The Reality Check: Queer in the Midwest
Let's be real though—it's not always perfect:
- Dating apps here still have that "seen everyone in a 50-mile radius" energy
- Finding other queer BIPOC can feel like searching for unicorns
- Winter isolation is REAL when depression hits and you're too frozen to leave your apartment
Creating Connection Anyway
What's worked for me is embracing smallness. Start with:
- Volunteer at the LGBT Community Center's Lakewood outreach events
- Become a regular somewhere—my Tuesday night bartender at Bottle House became family
- Join the Lakewood LGBTQ+ Facebook group for potlucks and picnics
Remember, your queerness is perfect exactly as it exists—whether you're out and proud or still finding your way. This little corner of the Midwest has space for all of us.
