Finding My Rainbow in the Oklahoma Dust
Ever wonder what it's like being the only person at a small-town gas station with a pride pin on your jacket? Let me tell you, it's both terrifying and exhilarating.
My Oklahoma Story
I grew up in a tiny town outside Tulsa where church pews outnumbered people. The day I decided to stop hiding was the day I truly began living. Walking through the local Walmart holding my partner's hand for the first time felt like stepping onto another planet - hearts pounding, palms sweating, but absolutely worth it.
When the Bible Belt Feels Too Tight
Being queer in Oklahoma comes with its unique challenges:
- The constant "Do you have a boyfriend?" questions at family gatherings
- Dating apps where people are "50 miles away" (translation: practically another state)
- Finding safe spaces when rainbow flags are few and far between
- Navigating workplaces where some colleagues have never knowingly met a queer person
Creating Your Own Oasis
Here's what's helped me survive and thrive:
- Seek out Oklahoma City and Tulsa's queer-friendly spots - they exist!
- Connect with online communities specific to queer Oklahomans
- Bring your authentic self to spaces, even when it's scary
- Find the allies - they're often quieter but fiercely supportive
- Remember that living honestly is a revolutionary act
You aren't alone in this red-dirt landscape. For every closed door, there's a window opening somewhere else. Your queerness isn't at odds with being Oklahoman - it's part of our state's rich tapestry.
