Finding Myself in the Middle of the Bible Belt
Ever wondered what it's like to be queer in a place where churches outnumber coffee shops? Let me tell you—it's both more challenging and more beautiful than you might think.
My Lawton Journey
When I first moved to Lawton three years ago, I was terrified. The military presence at Fort Sill gave the city structure, but I worried my identity would make me an outsider. I remember walking through Elmer Thomas Park, wondering if I'd ever find "my people" here. The first time I spotted a tiny rainbow flag in a local bookstore window, I nearly cried with relief.
The Dating Desert
Let's be real about the struggles:
- Dating apps show the same 15 profiles on repeat
- The nearest gay bar is an hour's drive
- Coming out means coming out again and again
- Well-meaning questions like "Have you tried church?"
Finding Your Oasis
Despite everything, community exists here! The LGBTQ+ support group at Cameron University welcomed me with open arms. I've learned that queer joy in Lawton requires creativity—we make our own spaces in book clubs, game nights, and online groups.
Remember, your authenticity is never a burden. Even in places that seem unwelcoming, your existence matters immensely.
