Finding My Rainbow in Lake Oswego: Being Queer in a Sea of Suburbia
Have you ever felt like the only splash of color in a beige neighborhood? That was me, three years ago, when I moved to Lake Oswego with nothing but hope and a U-Haul full of pride flags.
My Lake O Journey
Lake Oswego welcomed me with pristine streets and lakeside views, but I quickly realized rainbow stickers were few and far between. My first Pride month here, I nervously hung a small flag on my apartment balcony. To my surprise, an elderly neighbor brought cookies the next day with a note: "My grandson is gay. Thank you for being visible." Sometimes belonging begins with being brave enough to be seen.
When You're the "Only One"
The struggle is real in suburban spaces:
- Dating apps show matches 30+ minutes away
- Well-meaning neighbors who introduce you to their one other queer friend
- Community events that feel subtly heteronormative
- The constant coming-out conversations with new acquaintances
Creating Queer Community Here
I've learned that queer joy exists everywhere—even in Lake Oswego—if you know where to look:
- Join the Lake Oswego Equity Coalition events
- Attend monthly meetups at Lola's Café downtown
- Create the spaces you wish existed (my queer book club started with just 3 people!)
- Connect with Portland's larger LGBTQ+ community while building here
Remember, you're not actually alone. We're here, sometimes quiet, sometimes loud, but always present. Your existence makes space for others, just like that tiny balcony flag did for me.
