Finding Our Rainbow in the Palmetto Shine
Have you ever felt like the only rainbow fish swimming in an ocean of sameness? That's exactly how I felt when I first stepped onto the pristine beaches of Hilton Head Island three summers ago.
My Coastal Coming Out
I moved to Hilton Head for a hospitality job, trading the comforting queer bubble of Atlanta for sea turtles and southern hospitality. Those first weeks, I scanned Coligny Plaza and Harbour Town for any hint of rainbow flags or queer-friendly spaces, wondering if I'd made a terrible mistake. The island's reputation for golf, retirement communities, and family vacations didn't exactly scream LGBTQ+ haven.
The Invisible Tightrope
The struggle was real – and perhaps familiar to many of you:
- Constantly calculating when and where it was safe to hold my partner's hand
- Navigating well-meaning but awkward questions about my "roommate" situation
- Finding community beyond the sparse dating app options
- Balancing authentic self-expression with southern social norms
Creating Our Own Safe Harbor
What changed everything was stopping my search for the perfect queer community and starting to build one instead. Here's what worked:
- Connecting with the Lowcountry PRIDE groups in nearby Savannah and Beaufort
- Starting a monthly queer book club at Coffee Deli that grew into our own little chosen family
- Finding allied businesses and making them our regular hangouts
- Organizing beach meetups through subtle social media groups
Remember, your queerness doesn't diminish in places without rainbow crosswalks. Sometimes our light shines most brightly where it's least expected.
