Finding My Rainbow in the Heart of Tennessee
Have you ever felt like you were living two separate lives in the same small town? That's how I felt when I first moved to Clarksville—visible yet invisible all at once.
My Clarksville Story
When I arrived in Clarksville three years ago, I worried my identity would become something I'd have to hide. Between Fort Campbell's military presence and Tennessee's conservative reputation, I prepared myself for isolation. But Clarksville surprised me! Walking along the Cumberland Riverwalk during Pride month, I spotted rainbow flags in windows of local businesses and even met my first queer friends at Dunbar Cave State Park's hiking group.
When Being Yourself Feels Revolutionary
Despite these pockets of acceptance, challenges remain:
- The constant internal debate about when to come out to new people
- Dating pools that feel more like dating puddles
- Those awkward moments at church potlucks when people ask about your "future husband/wife"
- Finding affirming healthcare providers who understand queer needs
Creating Your Queer Sanctuary
Through trial and error, I've discovered some survival strategies:
- Connect with Austin Peay's Pride Center—even as a non-student, they often host community events
- Join the Clarksville PFLAG chapter's monthly meetings
- Explore Nashville's queer spaces just an hour away
- Be your authentic self in safe spaces first, then gradually expand your comfort zone
Remember, your existence here isn't just valid—it's necessary. Each queer person living authentically in Clarksville helps create space for others to do the same.
