Finding My Queer Joy in West Texas: A Journey Worth Taking
Have you ever felt like the only rainbow in a dust storm? That was me, three years ago, when I first moved to Lubbock with nothing but two suitcases and a heart full of apprehension.
My Lubbock Story
Tech campus became my sanctuary. Between the Spanish Renaissance architecture and the sprawling lawns, I found pockets of queer community that felt like oxygen. The first PFLAG meeting I attended in that little community center downtown changed everything - suddenly I wasn't navigating this conservative landscape alone.
When Being Yourself Feels Revolutionary
Let's be real about the challenges here:
- Dating apps show the same 12 people over and over (and 3 are your coworkers)
- Coming out becomes a calculated decision in every new friendship
- Finding affirming healthcare requires detective-level research
- Constantly explaining your pronouns gets exhausting
Creating Your Queer Haven
What's kept me sane is building my chosen family here. The Sugar Brown's coffee shop Sunday meetups. The book club that reads exclusively queer authors. The impromptu potlucks where nobody questions who you bring or how you identify.
Remember: your authenticity is never too much for the right people. Your existence makes Lubbock better, more vibrant, more real.
