Finding Your Rainbow in the Rio Grande Valley
Have you ever felt like a unicorn in a field of horses, especially here in McAllen? That's exactly how I felt when I first moved to this border town three years ago, searching for my queer community while surrounded by traditional Texan values.
My McAllen Journey
I still remember my first week here—wandering down Business 83, searching for any sign of rainbow flags or queer-friendly spaces. I eventually found a small bookstore with a tiny pride section and nearly cried from relief. The owner, Elena, became my first local friend and gateway to our hidden but vibrant community.
The Valley Queer Experience
Let's be honest about the struggles we face here:
- Dating apps that show matches 100+ miles away
- Well-meaning relatives who keep asking when you'll find "the right person"
- Religious communities that may not always embrace your authentic self
- The constant coming out process with new people you meet
Creating Your Queer Oasis
Through trial and error, I've discovered some survival strategies:
- Visit Grain to Glass on Thursday nights—it's become an unofficial gathering spot
- Join the RGV Pride Facebook groups (they're more active than they appear!)
- Attend events at South Texas College when they host LGBTQ+ speakers
- Create the spaces you wish existed—my monthly potluck started with just 4 people and now has over 20!
Remember, your queerness doesn't need to be louder just because we're in South Texas. Your existence here is both revolutionary and entirely natural.
