Finding Queer Joy in Mesquite: A Journey Worth Taking
Remember when we were told that small-town Texas wasn't for folks like us? That we'd need to escape to find our people? Well, I'm here to challenge that narrative from my little corner of Mesquite, where queer joy exists in unexpected places.
My Mesquite Awakening
Three years ago, I moved back to my hometown after a decade away. I was terrified. The Mesquite I remembered wasn't exactly waving pride flags. That first month, I kept to myself until one evening at Town East Mall, I spotted a person with a small rainbow pin. We made eye contact, smiled, and suddenly I wasn't alone anymore. That chance encounter led me to a hidden network of LGBTQ+ folks who'd been here all along.
The Invisible Walls We Face
Living queerly in Mesquite comes with challenges:
- The exhaustion of constantly coming out to new people
- Dating pools that feel puddle-sized
- Well-meaning but clueless neighbors asking about your "roommate"
- Finding safe spaces to fully express yourself
Creating Our Own Magic
What I've learned is that we must create the community we crave.
- Start small: monthly potlucks in safe homes build lasting connections
- Utilize online groups specifically for Dallas suburbs
- Support queer-friendly businesses like The Book Nook on Main Street
- Be visibly you when safe—visibility creates ripples
You aren't alone in this Texas suburb. Your existence here matters and makes Mesquite better, more colorful, more true. We're changing this city simply by living authentically within it.
