Ever Wondered What It's Like Being Queer in East Texas?
Y'all, I never thought finding my authentic self would happen under the pine trees of Tyler, but here we are! Life has a way of blooming where you least expect it.
My Tyler Journey
I still remember that summer evening at Bergfeld Park, holding hands with my partner for the first time in public. The sunset painted the sky in pinks and purples—nature's own pride flag, I like to think. We got some looks, sure, but also a surprising nod from an elderly couple that felt like a blessing we didn't know we needed.
The Real Talk: It's Not Always Roses
Living queer in Tyler comes with its challenges:
- Dating apps that seem to think "nearby" means Dallas (90 miles is not nearby, thank you!)
- The dance of figuring out which spaces are truly welcoming
- Building community when sometimes it feels like we're scattered stars
- Family dinners where you're both out and not-out simultaneously
Finding Your People
But here's what worked for me: authenticity attracts authenticity. The True Vine gatherings became my sanctuary. The local library's book club. That coffee shop on Broadway where the barista with the pronoun pin always remembers my order.
Your Tyler queer family exists—sometimes we're just waiting in the corners where art happens, where music plays, where books are discussed.
You Are Not Alone
On those days when Tyler feels too small, remember that your experience matters. Your love is valid in every longitude and latitude. We're here, creating pockets of belonging between the church steeples and rose gardens.
