Finding My Rainbow in Mormon Country: A Queer Journey in Ogden
Ever wondered what it's like being the only rainbow fish swimming upstream in a river of conformity? That was me, three years ago, when I first moved to Ogden, Utah—a place where the mountains are as towering as the religious expectations.
My Ogden Awakening
I still remember that first winter here, standing beneath the twinkling Christmas lights on 25th Street, simultaneously enchanted by the beauty and terrified of being discovered. The historic buildings watched over me like silent witnesses as I navigated this conservative landscape while trying not to lose my authentic self. Surprisingly, behind those mountains lay pockets of acceptance I never expected to find.
When Being Yourself Feels Revolutionary
The struggle is real, my queer siblings. Here's what most of us face:
- Dating apps where the same 15 people appear over and over (hello, familiar faces!)
- The constant coming-out conversations with new coworkers and neighbors
- That awkward silence when someone assumes your "roommate" is just... a roommate
- Finding safe spaces to simply exist without explanation
Creating Your Queer Oasis
After years of trial and error, I've discovered some truths: Lighthouse Lounge hosts the best drag shows every third Saturday. The coffee shop on Harrison has a secret pride flag behind the counter—the baristas will know you're family. Weber State's LGBT Resource Center welcomes community members, not just students. Sometimes, building home means creating the spaces we needed all along.
Remember, your existence here isn't just valid—it's revolutionary. Every authentic conversation ripples outward, changing this valley one heart at a time.
