Finding My Rainbow in the Utah Valley
Have you ever felt like a unicorn in a land of horses? That moment when your barista casually asks about your "husband" and you freeze, mentally calculating whether it's safe to mention your wife?
My Orem Awakening
When I first moved to Orem three years ago, I brought along my pride flag, my collection of Janelle Monáe albums, and a healthy dose of anxiety. The tree-lined streets and mountain views were breathtaking, but as a queer woman, I wondered if I'd ever truly belong. My first month here, I went to a neighborhood potluck and spent the entire evening avoiding pronouns when discussing my partner back home.
The Silent Struggles
Being queer in Orem often means:
- Constantly coming out (or choosing not to) in everyday situations
- Finding yourself the unofficial "educator" on LGBTQ+ topics
- Navigating dating apps where people are often in different stages of their coming out journey
- Searching for safe spaces that feel truly welcoming
Finding Your People
What saved me? Community. I started small—joining the Encircle House events in Provo, attending UVU Pride Alliance meetings even though I wasn't a student, and finding online groups specifically for queer folks in Utah County. The key isn't finding hundreds of people; it's finding your people.
You Are Not Alone
On days when Orem feels too small, remember that behind many doors are people like you, creating pockets of acceptance and love in this valley. Your existence here matters and makes this community richer.
