Finding My Rainbow in Kenosha: A Queer Journey Through Wisconsin's Lakeside City
Ever wonder what it's like to come out in a mid-sized Midwest city where everyone seems to know everyone? Let me tell you, it's both terrifying and beautiful.
My Kenosha Story
I still remember that crisp October evening when I nervously walked into Public Craft Brewing for their first-ever Pride night. Having lived in Kenosha all my life, I was certain I'd see someone I knew—maybe a former teacher or my mom's coworker. Instead, I found a vibrant community I never knew existed right here along Lake Michigan's shores. The way the sunset painted the brewery windows in pinks and purples felt like the universe giving me a sign.
When It Gets Tough
Let's be honest about the challenges we face here:
- Dating apps that show the same 20 people within a 50-mile radius
- The awkward "So... do you know any other gay people?" conversations
- Explaining to family why you're driving to Milwaukee or Chicago every weekend
- The constant coming out—to your dentist, your hairdresser, the person behind you at Festival Foods
Finding Your People
What saved me was realizing I didn't need to leave Kenosha to find community. Start small:
- Check out LGBT+ events at UW-Parkside
- Join the Kenosha Pride Facebook group
- Volunteer with local progressive organizations
- Be the person you needed when you first came out
Remember, your queerness makes Kenosha more colorful, more interesting, and more whole.
You Are Not Alone
On those days when Lake Michigan looks as gray as you feel, know that there are others like you watching the same waves, thinking the same thoughts. We're here. We're queer. We're in Kenosha.
